    Andy -

This is something we've discussed before over the years, but it's a fairly agreed upon usability no-no. See this slightly old article for a detailed explanation.

It's really easy to open links in a new window by apple/command+clicking the link or right-click on a PC. This allows each user to decide how they want to handle the page opening for themselves.

    Thanks,
    Nicole

Interesting article. Love smashing, read it every day. However I think it's a matter of workflow. In my common usage at least I'm using an external link to reference what's being described in the ticket. I'll make the change then close the ticket and continue my workflow in lighthouse.

To cite a section in your article:

"It is appropriate to enforce opening links in a new window in case:

the link may interrupt an ongoing process.

For instance, if users are filling a web-form and the form provides the link to terms of service or privacy policy below the form it is reasonable to enforce this link to open in a new window to not interrupt the ongoing process. This is important in sign-up forms and crucial in checkout-forms. Otherwise users may lose the information they’ve already typed in and close the browser window in response."

    Hi Andy,

Since it's fairly easy to open any link in a new tab with just a CTRL+click or a middle click, there is rarely a reason to force it on a user. If you want, you can search for a browser extension that would allow you to do that, such as http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/29554

Let me know if I can help you with anything else.
